Sympoiesis

Exhibition Design | Brand Identity | Social Media Campaign

This exhibition was the culmination of an entire cohort’s semester-long work in the Communications Design Cross-Disciplinary studio. The studio’s objective was for students to explore non-human ways of being, thinking, and knowing. By turning our attention to entanglements beyond the traditional separation of species, we can take steps towards dismantling the binary of nature culture and offer new world-making potential to the climate-crisis argument.

I was part of the team that organized, curated, and set up the exhibition while coordinating with students, faculty, and the gallery managers. I also led the communications team that created digital and physical promotional materials. Finally, I contributed with my personal work.

Sympoiesis is the act of co-creation. We’ve partnered with animals, plants, fungi, and stars to create projected realities from non-human perspectives. The process of making-with does not aim to imitate natural processes but rather relate them to human perception. This is our attempt to, in Ursula LeGuin’s words, “subjectify the universe because look at where objectifying it has gotten us.”

The exhibition was on display in the AES NYC gallery in SoHo in August of 2023.
